The most common radon system is a sub-slab depressurization system. Because the air pressure inside a house is typically lower than the pressure in the soil around its foundation, radon is drawn into the home through cracks in the foundation and other openings. These cracks and other openings are sealed. A fan, is installed and typically located outside the home and is used to draw air out from under a basement or crawl space. A PVC pipe is installed into the slab and is connected to the fan unit outside. This creates a negative air pressure below the slab as compared to the air above. The sub-slab depressurization system needs to create this sub-slab negative pressure to reduce Radon from entering into the space to be mitigated below the US EPA recommended level of 4.0 pCi/L.
Radon levels are measured in picocuries per liter, or pCi/L.
